In the heart of a summer that’s too hot, too yellow, a little girl explores simple joys and seeks beauty where no one is looking: in the air getting electric, the sky changing color, the smell of the earth rising in the air. In the moment it finally starts to rain. A powerful and sensory debut picture book by Pauline Dalmais, as author/illustrator.

“ Celui qui voulait toujours se promener dans la forêt” | Alexis Jenni & Anton Van Herbruggen | Paulsen Jeunesse | 40pp | 24.5 x 30.4 cm

In Gold Rush America, John is a lonely young boy who, at night, once his field work is done, invents mechanical objects, makes clocks and alarm clocks, and devours books. When his future seems all mapped out, he decides that he will be free, that nature will be his life, and that he will devote his time to observing it, exploring it, and learning about it. So, he sets off with a few tea leaves and a blanket in his bundle. He crosses America on foot to uncover all the trees he doesn’t know. And when he realizes that what he loves most is threatened, he fights to save the trees and thus invents the foundations of political ecology. Thanks to him, parks have been created so that everyone can continue to walk in them.

While tending the family yaks on the Tibetan highlands, at an altitude of over 4,500 meters, young Tenzing dreams of a greater life. In 1921, at the age of 7, he encounters a caravan of British explorers on their way to the summit of Everest. The elegance and equipment of these climbers leaves a big impression on him. He too wants to reach the top. With determination, he reaches Darjeeling and climbs the ladder one by one over the course of numerous expeditions. He is 39 when they become, along with Edmund Hillary, the first men to reach the world’s highest peak. The year 1953 goes down in history, as does Tenzing.

Landing in 1857 on the small island of Lime Rock, north of New York, to follow her lighthouse keeper father, Ida turns out to be, at the age of 12, the best swimmer in the area. She learns to sail a rowboat, just as she learns to take care of the lighthouse. When her father falls ill, she becomes the only one who can replace him in his duties. Ida carries out maintenance and surveillance work, in charge of the lantern that helps the boats navigate to reach Newport Harbor. And when Ida sees four boys in danger in the water, she knows she has to act, because their lives depend on it. She doesn’t hesitate for a second. After that first rescue, there will be many others, although no one will know about them, and it didn’t matter to Ida. She wasn’t afraid and she was just doing what she did best in life: saving lives.

Fridtjof Nansen, the explorer who saved thousands of lives, explained to children by Alexis Jenni (winner of the 2011 Goncourt Prize, France’s most prestigious literary award)

During his life, Fridtjof did everything very well, but very well was never enough, he was always looking for ways to do very, very well. He studied zoology, devoted himself to scientific research, drew and wrote. It still wasn’t enough. As no one had ever done it before, he decided to cross Greenland on skis. Then, as he often thought of the Great White, at the top of the world, he wanted to be the first to go to the North Pole, and that would be really, really good. The expedition lasted three years, and he survived the cold and hunger, but he never made it to the Pole. That wasn’t so good, so he wanted to do something even better, but for others this time. After the First World War, he created a passport for those who no longer had a country and saved thousands of lives. And that was very, very good indeed.

Ada Blackjack, Arctic survivor, explained to children by Alexis Jenni (winner of the 2011 Goncourt Prize, France’s most prestigious literary award)

Ada was as tall as the three letters that made her name. But as strong-willed as an Inuit whose ancestors learned to survive by hunting. Sent to the town of Nome, she learned to read, sew and cook, but not to hunt walrus or build an igloo. Ada was living alone with her sick little boy when she was hired as a helper on an expedition to Wrangel Island with four young men who were a bit dreamy but not quite explorers. There was a first winter and no one came and got them. There was a second winter. And Ada ended up alone. The three boys had gone to look for help, and one had died. She had to learn to manage on her own to hunt, keep warm, protect herself and survived for another season until a boat arrived.

“Skateboard. Comprendre et progresser” | David Couliau & Vincent Milou | Paulsen Jeunesse | 208pp | 15 x 21 cm | 9+

A guide to skateboarding for young people who want to live their passion.

Choosing the right board, practicing the main tricks, inventing a street line, learning the rules of skating together, meeting the pioneers of that sport and those who are making its history… Understanding skateboarding is, above all, about understanding its cultural dimension. You don’t «practice» skateboarding like you do football or gymnastics. When you practice skateboarding, you enter a world of its own: it becomes a way of life, builds friendships, influences musical tastes, and offers an entire value system that will change your relationship with the world. A territory of virtuoso physical experimentation, it requires total commitment of the body while seeking the beauty of movement.

In this guide, mixing photography and illustrations, each sport (street, bowl, or ramp) will be treated with the necessary nuances both for better understanding and for safety reasons, as they are not subject to the same constraints. Numerous interviews introduce readers to the key players in the field, because beyond the «athletes», there is a diverse scene of players who make up the culture and life of this practice.
